Valuable Lessons I’ve Learned About Pets

How to Give your Pet Dog Medication

Owning a pet means you have to ensure it is perfect health. In case of illnesses, you have to be in charge of giving it the meds. Just like people, dogs also hate taking medication, and you shall, therefore, need a way to make sure it has swallowed it, if it is to get better.

In case it is liquid medication, you will have an easier time. You will have an easier time than if it were pills and capsules. All you have to do is to part its lips and gently pour in the medication. The swallowing reaction will see to it that they receive the medication adequately. There are also some of these liquid medications that can be mixed with the food.

You may be forced, if it is pills, to give it by hand directly. You will need to tilt its head upwards, then using your index and thumb fingers on the upper jaw behind the canines, make it open its mouth. Once it is open, you place the pill as far back into the mouth as possible. Then keep its mouth shut for some time. You can also blow on its nose, which will make it feel like swallowing. Be careful how you blow on its nose, since it does not feel great. If it is an aggressive dog; it may harm you.

You can hide the medications in the pet food. The dog may not notice it, and thus swallow it along with its food. There are also tablets you can crush and mix with the food, if the vet allows. You also have the option of dipping them in honey, peanut butter, or some other treat.

You can also make use of a dog pill plunger. It is specifically designed to administer pet medications. It eliminates the risk of your fingers being bitten when you pry open its mouth. You only need to place the pill on the tip, then put the plunger into the dog’s mouth. It is by pushing the plunger that the medication gets administered into the mouth. You can then hold the mouth closed for a while.

However, the best way to do this, for the pet and you, is through the pill pockets. They are basically dog treats that have a hollow section for inserting the medication. The pocket is a great place for hiding the medication, which makes the administering work easy. They are presented in several flavors, so that you have a choice of the pet’s most favorite. Some have vitamins added to them, which is good for the pet’s health.
It is advisable to give the dog a treat after it has taken its medication well. The shall thus not have a problem with the next session. Make sure you follow the instructions on the packaging of the medication carriers.
